Learn how parametric design can pave the way to carbon-neutral buildings with Sandeep Ahuja, Founder and CEO of URBAN-X Cohort 06 company Cove.Tool; Elliot Glassman, Associate and Technical Principal with Built Ecology at WSP; and Colin Schless, Vice President at Thornton Tomasetti.

Building operations contribute to 40% of U.S. carbon emissions and there is often a disconnect between climate change and action in architecture practices. Most other economic sectors have rapidly adopted data-driven tools and processes to achieve sustainability targets but architects have been slow to embrace technology to make better decisions. With the consultant or firm specialist model being used by most firms, only 55% of projects are modeled for energy efficiency.

Parametric design is a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response.

Sandeep Ahuja

Founder and CEO of cove.tool

Sandeep Ahuja, co-founder of cove.tool, brings her experience of building a successful sustainability consulting firm Pattern r+d (the consulting arm of cove.tool). Most recently, Sandeep presented at the UN environment assembly, with 1500 global delegates, on the impact of buildings on climate change, showcased at the Tedx Atlanta, won the Atlanta Startup Battle and a 30 under 30 award for developing cove.tool, the automated sustainability consultant.

Multiple publications have written about Sandeep's impact in the AEC industry including Architect magazine, Tech Crunch, Site Selection, ArchDaily and more. With her desire to bring automation into the AEC world, she is pioneering the integration of building performance into the design and construction process by developing and using intelligent technology and software.

Elliot Glassman AIA NCARB LEED BD+C CPHD, Built Ecology at WSP.

Elliot Glassman is an Associate and Technical Principal with Built Ecology, WSP's high performance and sustainability group. He is also a charter member of WSP's global computational design group WSPnext.

Elliot obtained his Bachelors of Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Masters of Design Studies in Sustainable Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 12 years of combined professional practice as an architect and sustainability consultant, Elliot has worked on various projects around the world, each requiring a unique response to a diverse set of climatic, site, and programmatic conditions.

Elliot's main area of focus is combining computational design techniques with performance simulation to inform the design process. These computational techniques help identify integrated design solutions that improve the performance of the built environment in areas such as energy, daylight, renewable energy, and thermal and visual comfort.

Colin Schless, CPHC, LEED AP BD+C, Vice President at Thornton Tomasetti.

Colin Schless leads Thornton Tomasetti’s Eastern Region energy modeling and building analytics practice. Thornton Tomasetti is a 1,500-plus person multi-disciplinary engineering firm with 54 offices worldwide. Colin’s background is in building science and he manages the company’s passive house and R&D efforts related to parametric design and analysis. His project experience ranges from a 500,000 gross square foot museum in Riyadh Saudi Arabia to the first large-scale cold-climate multifamily passive house located in Brewer, Maine. Colin is one of 10 members serving on the Passive House US Technical committee.
